Wanda, I think the term for them is spines rather than thorns. They are not really that harmful, but would certainly deter any creature from trying to climb the trunk.
One, these trees are deciduous in our dry season. The flowers bloom when they are few leaves left on the trees, almost as if they are trying to make up for the bareness of the tree.

I have to admit your cotton tree was not what I was expecting. I came back to comment because in comparison to our cotton tree, the one native to your locale is a swan compared to our ugly duckling. The first photo of the flower is amazing.
oh! lovely! I love the Red Silk Cotton when it is in full bloom. Especially the way an almost 'dried-up' looking tree with no leaves suddenly seems to burst into flames. Spectacular. For us it blooms in March.
